I've been running in Zoot shoes exclusively since 2008. I've worn mostly Tempo's and TT's. I tried the Kalani 2.0 and loved the way the shoe ran but it was too narrow in the toe box. When I returned them they went out of stock and I tried the Kalani 3.0's. The 3.0 is a significant step down from the 2.0. The toe box is still too narrow to be called a true medium width and my toes blistered and bled on the first run. This shoe is also a shallower drop than the 2.0 and feels like running on planks comparatively.
The reason I bought the Kalani's was for a more cushioned trainer than the TT's I normally run in due to an old ankle injury and an upcoming IM.
If you're listening Zoot, take the TT last and build the Kalani 2.0 shoe on it. Use the entire TT upper as the asymmetrical lacing. The Kalani asymmetry is horrible. Also...bring back the heel loop. One of the reasons I buy these shoes is for quick entry/exit and it's more difficult without the heel loop.
I'm going to try the 5.0 Tempo but am skeptical given the reviews.
Last thing...I was very enthusiastic about recommending Zoot shoes to friends. I had just recommended a pair to a buddy and then I went running in the Kalani 3.0's. With the bloody toes...the buddy decided not to buy a pair.
Word of mouth is important in the shoe business...especially since you change styles every year (which I hate BTW).
Confused by...some other reviews...
Also have run nearly exclusively in Zoots. I usually go for the Ultra Race for races, and the Ultra TT for up tempo training and longer races. If you're familiar with the Ultra Race, the width is narrow, intended to be used without socks. The TT I've noticed is wider, and actually use with or without socks.
These run very similar to the Ultra Race in terms of narrow-ness, but with more cushioning, making them perfect for longer run legs. I would still recommend sizing UP half a size. I've never had a problem with blistering or "asymmetry" (?).
Also, there IS a heel loop. Not sure what that last guy was talking about.
